For some reason, Josiah has not been going to sleep easily lately. It doesn't seem to matter how tired he is or what we have done that day, he just drags out bed time. I think that Chris and I are both starting to go a little crazy. At the end of a long day, it is nice to feel done. But sometimes it takes us an hour or two after the bedtime routine to settle Josiah in. It is hard not to feel cranky after all of this too.
Today for nap time was not exception. We did our usual routine, and Josiah was obviously exhausted, yet resisting sleep (As I was typing this, he peeked his head into my room. It's the first time he has ever gotten out of bed and come out in the middle of a sleep time!). Once, when I went into his room, he said, "It's time to wake up now!" I informed him that it wasn't time to get up since he hadn't slept at all, and he replied, "Oh...thanks for telling me mommy."
It's looking like nap time might be over without sleep today!

The Yard
We have a had a record-breaking amount of snow here this year. It's been crazy. And also difficult for a toddler to keep his head above the banks when they tower over him by more than a foot!
So, Chris has gradually made our backyard into a fun zone. It's like a snow maze with tunnels. Here are a few pictures:
After every snow fall, Chris and Josiah go out and do some more shovelling. They are both enjoying it.
Josiah is such a lucky little guy. I think only a truly wonderful dad would take the time to shovel all of this on top of the huge amount of regular shovelling there has been so far.
If you live close enough, feel free to bring the kids over to play!

On days like today, that are kind of messy all the way around, I am glad that God uses little things in my toddler to remind me of Himself (especially when it seems my toddler is the one making things challenging!).
One thing is listening to Josiah pray. It is truly conversational, and I learn a lot from listening to him. He talks about everything he has done, people he has seen, things that hurt his feelings, toys that he loves to play with, Bo, etc...Nothing is off limits. I need to do this more often.
The other thing is the way Josiah views people. He does not have many judgements yet. It isn't that he is trying to treat everyone the same...he just has no reason not to. His kindness and friendliness extend to the rich lady behind us in the grocery store to the 'street' person on the sidewalk on our way out. His sympathy runs deep, regardless of people's motives or how they have gotten themselves into the places they are in.
I am so thankful for these little glimpses of heaven on earth...they remind me that God is still here. He is stronger and bigger than the situations I/others deal with, and it gives me hope in the things that are to come.

Ultrasound
On Monday, we had our 20-week ultrasound. Here are a few highlights:
- The most important one is that the baby is looking strong and healthy. This was such a relief for me, as I've been worried about the affect my health may be having on the development.
- They will do a more detailed scan of the baby's heart in another month to check for any defects, but it seems to be okay at this point.
- He/she was very wiggly and active, sucking on hands, kicking feet. It was so much fun to watch!
- There was a striking resemblance to Josiah's ultrasound pictures, particularly the little nose and shape of the cheeks.
- This one is average in size (YAY!!). After having a ten-and-a-half-pounder the first time around, average is sounding very good to me!

When I got married, I couldn't imagine ever being able to love Chris more than I did on our wedding day. When I gave birth to Josiah, I couldn't imagine loving him more than I did the first moment I saw him and held him....

19 Weeks
Nineteen weeks already! This pregnancy is almost half over, and I feel like I am behind on a lot. I don't even have a pregnancy memory journal yet! You'd think since Chris and I are both second kids that we'd be more on the ball to make sure that we had everything just as organized for this baby as for the first, but we just don't have the time anymore! I am planning to start the journal in the next couple of weeks.
Here are a few updates on the pregnancy:
- The baby has been moving a lot, and even rolled over for the first time last night. I forgot that feeling until it happened. When I say moving a lot, it is still just a fraction of the performance that Josiah put on when he was in there! We are hoping this means that the new baby might be calm?!
- I am still having a ton of appointments, usually at least one a week. It's a bit tiring, but I am thankful for the care at the same time. I am considered high-risk because of my heart issue caused by a birth defect. The symptoms have just surfaced during this pregnancy and I have not been feeling well because of this. My heart is functioning around 40%, which explains the extreme fatigue and weakness (in addition to the usual exhaustion that comes with pregnancy). After the baby comes, I will likely have heart surgery. This has increased my anxiety...a C-section followed by heart surgery. Not looking forward to the summer!
- Next week is our 20 week ultrasound. I am excited, but very nervous. There is so much that can go wrong, and I am hoping for good news. So far, the baby seems really healthy, but because of the heart issues I've had happening I'll be relieved to have proof that the baby is developing well.
- Chris and I are torn on whether to find out the gender or not. We didn't for Josiah, and it was such an exciting surprise; however it would be much easier this time around to know...we'll see!
- Josiah seems to be getting more excited about the baby. He's been talking to my belly a lot. A couple of weeks ago, he came over and said, "BABY! I want you to come out and play now. I'll share..." He went on to list all of the toys he would share. When I told him the baby would have to stay in for a little while longer, he tried to climb on my stomach and said that he wanted to go in too!
- I have narrowed my name choices down to three or four for each gender. I love the girl name I have picked out. The boy names are harder, but they were last time too. I don't think that Chris has given much thought to names yet, or maybe he just hasn't shared with me yet. He has given some suggestions for middle names that he likes.
- Although (as most of you know) I really dislike being pregnant, I am finding myself sad thinking that this might be the last one. Chris and I had talked about having two, so it seems like this will be it.
- It is really nice this time around to not be focused on stuff! I found when I was pregnant with Josiah that I was so preoccupied with getting things ready (because we had so little). This time, I feel prepared, so I am more focused on the baby than the room!
- In preparation, we have gotten Josiah a new bed a a new dresser so the baby can move into the nursery set when he/she arrives. We were so fortunate to have found a bed and dresser on a second-hand website. So far, we have only spent $200 on all furniture and bedding. Although the bed and dresser are not a perfect match, they are very close, and work really well together. Here is Josiah helping me wash the new dresser:
He was a little upset in the car after we picked up the dresser because he thought it was another new bed. He kept saying, "No thank-you...I don't want it..." After he realized it was drawers, he was happy! When we got home, he ran into his room and started pulling clothes out of his old dresser to put in the new one. I guess he won't be sad to leave his baby set to his younger sibling!
